Understanding suicide and emotional crisis
Suicidal thoughts are a sign of unbearable pain, not weakness. They often come in waves, and with support most people get through them.
What it can feel like
Exhausted, hopeless, trapped or like a burden. Pain can narrow thinking until it seems like nothing will change. The person usually wants the pain to stop more than they want to die.
Warning signs
- Talking about wanting to die or having no reason to live.
- Withdrawing, giving away belongings or saying goodbye.
- Big changes in sleep, mood, drinking or drug use.
- A sudden calm after a long period of despair.
What to do
- Ask directly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Asking does not plant the idea.
- Listen without judgment and take what they say seriously.
- Stay with them, and help them reach 988 or the Crisis Center at 205-323-7777.
- If there is immediate danger, call 911 and stay until help arrives.
- Avoid arguing, minimizing or promising to keep it secret.
