How to help someone in need
You do not need to be an expert to make a difference. You need to be patient, honest and respectful.
Start with the person
Use their name. Ask what they need instead of deciding for them. People in hard times are often treated as problems to solve, and being treated as a person is its own kind of help.
Use person-first language, like “a person experiencing homelessness” or “a person with a substance use disorder.”
What helps
- Listen without rushing to fix or judge.
- Offer choices, not orders. Having some control matters when so much has been lost.
- Do what you say you will do. Follow-through builds trust faster than big promises.
- Keep a few numbers handy: 211, 988 and the local crisis line, 205-323-7777.
- Offer a concrete task, like a ride, a phone call made together or help filling out a form.
What to avoid
- Lecturing, blaming or asking “why didn’t you…”
- Promising to keep a secret when someone’s safety is at risk.
- Taking over. Help in a way that keeps their dignity and choices intact.
Know your limits
You are not the only support a person needs. Connect them with trained help and take care of yourself too. In an emergency, call 911.
