Understanding homelessness
Homelessness means not having a safe, stable and adequate place to live. It includes sleeping outside, in a car, in a shelter or moving between friends’ couches.
How it happens
There is rarely one cause. Job loss, rent increases, medical bills, eviction, leaving an abusive home, disability, mental illness and addiction can all play a part, and one setback can be enough when there is no savings to absorb it.
What it feels like
Exhausted, because safe sleep is hard to find. On guard, because belongings and safety are never certain. Invisible, because people look away. Ashamed, even though it is not a moral failing.
Everyday tasks become hard. Without an address, a phone or an ID, it is difficult to apply for jobs, benefits or housing, and each lost document makes the next step harder.
How to help
- Treat people with ordinary courtesy. A greeting matters.
- Share One Roof’s outreach line, 205-920-1895, or 211 if someone asks for help.
- Donate, volunteer or give to shelters such as Firehouse, First Light, Pathways and Jimmie Hale Mission, which can turn gifts into meals, beds and case management.
- Do not assume addiction or mental illness. Many people are simply out of money and options.
