Understanding poverty and being underserved
Poverty is more than a lack of money. It is the daily work of making too little cover too much, and it often falls hardest on communities that have been underserved for generations.
What it feels like
Choosing between rent, medicine and food. Planning every dollar and every bus ride. Hesitating to ask for help because of shame or fear of being judged. Having less time, energy and room for mistakes because everything is a crisis.
Why it persists
Low wages, rising rent, unreliable transportation, limited access to health care and past exclusion from loans and housing all stack up. Needing help is rarely a personal failure.
How to help
- Give people information and respect. Share 211 and local pantries and utility programs.
- Support organizations that already do the work, and ask what they need.
- Volunteer consistently, since steady help is worth more than a one-time gesture.
- Speak up for fair housing, transit and health access where you live.
